Discussion:
[Webreports-uedesign] A few more minor issues

1. I clicked on Add New Entry on the My Blab page and then clicked on
Back without saving or writing anything. I ended up with an empty Blab.
Some kids have had the same problem.

2. The reason I did this was I was wondering if the Blabs allowed me to
upload TT files (or anything else). Reports are too heavyweight for
causal saving. Couldn't Blabs have full editing as well?

3. One of the girls said she couldn't log on from home. It gave the
error page that you get if you type your password wrong. She understood
about case sensitivity and needed no help logging in from school. She
said it was an XP machine. The other day a kid forgot about case in his
password and was stuck logging in until I suggested he try different
casing combinations. Is there some way to help such kids? E.g. a log of
failed attempts to log in? Recall that they don't have an email address.

Generally things went very well. One kid generated 3 reports in a short
amount of time.

Best,

Yes, this is because there is a sort of factory method in the background,
which creates an empty object (blab item, document, report etc). I believe
we'll have to live with this problem, I cannot easily fix it. The empty
object can always be removed manually, if necessary.

I'll check how difficult this would be to change. Adding it to the
comments was fairly easy, so I would assume it should be easy to add to
the blabs as well.

This I haven't seen and cannot explain.

Yes, I realize case sensitivity is a usability issue, but I think it would
be too difficult to change.

As far as I can see, there is no "failed login" log in the system. I'll
keep looking.

Hello,

I think it would be very useful to have a notification service informing us
whenever a document that we own (could be report, blabl, comment, or
whatever) is commented by someone else.
I think a table "The 10 most recent comments your received" could be added
to the welcome page, together with the tables concerniong reports and
blabs; in this way could be easier to keep trace of what is going on with
my documents.
The same could be done with a "The 10 most rcent comments" in general (not
personalized), which would help us in watching what is going on.
I also think that such features might fucntion as propellents for
discussions among the project communities.

Yes, good idea(s). I have been looking at this, as Yishay and I discussed
it before Christmas. It's true that we need some notification when someone
comments on our reports. For me the only issue is which is the best way to
send the notices. For now, we have three alternatives:

1. email
2. site message
3. a table on the site start page

Personally I would avoid option 1. simply because most of the pupils do not
even have an email address.

Site messages could work better, but I think that we would have some
problems in case we receive many comments; in that case we would be
hindered by an ocean of messages

Perhaps the best option is the third one, with maybe a unique notification
message on login, advicing that there are unreaded comments, is that possible?

A table on the welcome page does not scale too well. It's good to have
the most recently updated reports in general, where "commented on"
counts as updated.
Alternatively, we could have one list for the most recent updated & one
for the most popular - i.e., most commented on / most read.

As for personal notifications, I think mail / messaging is the way to
go. Michele is right that most kids don not have email. I think the
solution to that is to have a default setting for "notifications by
msgs", which you can change to "by mail". As for the issue of clutter, I
suggest we move the msgs from the left hand bar to a separate page. My
observation is that kids love this feature, and use it a lot. On the
other hand, when reading a report, seeing all your msgs on the margin is
distracting.
